Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) was the result of work by Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of California. This was in the 1970s. They observed a number of psychiatrists and therapists in dialogue with their patients. From this, they extradited the type of language and behaviour used by them, and which seemed to motivate and help their patients.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is a rather cumbersome name for an approach which is straightforward:
- The “neuro” refers to our neurological processes (how we take information in though our senses, the thoughts involved and the feelings)
- the “linguistic” to the language we use to consciously think with, to communicate with,
- “programming” to ways that we can choose to behave.
By putting these together we can choose how we behave in order to motivate ourselves and others; to be excellent communicators and to assist development and learning. It can be a powerful approach to communication in the workplace.
Much of what is learnt in the study of social, psychological and psychiatric approaches is very similar; this is after all, where NLP had its roots. NLP has now developed into an approach which is widely used with normal healthy people to achieve the objectives set out above.
